When addressing unconscious bias, it is essential to recognize and understand predispositions you may have because of your experience, your gender, your sexual orientation, and your social background.
Discussing the issue in an honest and open forum and raising awareness of unconscious bias is the best way of starting to mitigate it.
When people understand that they have implicit biases, they are more likely to take steps to slow down their decision-making process. It will allow their more logical brain to make decisions instead of relying on their gut instinct, which can be influenced by bias.
Tools to assist in moving away from bias include:
Exercise personal self-awareness.
Diversify team leaders to include different cultural, geographic, and industry experiences.
Build blended teams to increase awareness of different perspectives.
